We spent the last entry of Carduus volutarioides year, endemic to Tenerife recently described and related to Carduus baeocephalus of Gran Canaria and El iron. This entry has been made possible by the invaluable cooperation Fabián Hernández Romero who sent us this photo and the text enclosed in quotation marks.
"Carduus volutarioides was described by the young botanist Alfredo Reyes-Betancourt in 2003. The name was very successful since their appearance and demeanor reminiscent of Accredited canariensis. As the common name assigned or called with the name" slender thistle. "He also has been called with the name" thistle Icod "(Machado, 2005). This last name is not quite correct because the populations of Carduus volutarioides is present in a relatively small area of \u200b\u200bTenerife but within the municipal boundaries of Garachico and Icod de los Vinos. The first examples of this annual thistle were found nearby neighborhood of El Guincho, in the municipality of Garachico. This population is within the boundaries of the protected landscape of the Cliffs of the cylinder head (T-33) (LIC). Later the plant was also found farther east, in the town of Icod, and greater number of individuals.
annual thistle is in the geographic area where it can be seen in abandoned gardens and terraces and edges of tracks or roads. Always anthropised areas. Probably because it went unnoticed by botanists ... not frequent these places. More recently, the 2008 Addendum and Red Book Atlas of the Vascular Flora of Spain under threat has been rated the category of endangered taxa ( IN ).
